Why Colombia?

Why Colombia? This is a question we get asked a lot! I think a lot of it is due to the fact that when you think of international adoption, you probably do not think Colombia. It is not a very "common" place to adopt from. In 2009 only 238 children were adopted to the US from Colombia compared to 3001 in China!

We picked Colombia for a few reasons, but I will be honest; it was not our first choice. When we started the adoption process we went in thinking it we would adopt from Korea. Right after we started our classes last year, we found out that Korea was planning on closing adoptions by 2012 & we did not want to chance them shutting down on us. We were back at the "drawing board" & were open to ideas.

On the last night of our adoption class 2 kids came into to speak with us. They both had been adopted from Colombia & made such an impact on the DH & I. We really thought they were great & there was just something about them that sparked something in us. When I started researching agencies that worked with Colombia I found it was hard to find!

One of the lovely ladies on Twitter had a friend that had adopted from Colombia & she sent me her way...after that things just started falling in place, so it felt right.

We are so very excited to be adopting from Colombia! We know it's not "typical" & that is ok. We know there will be a lot of questions, we know there will be a lot of stigmas (which we are already hearing) but we know that our baby, our LP is in Colombia!

We were just meant to adopt from this that is why Colombia! 2 kids & a feeling :)

  1. I'm so excited for you! I think it's a great choice!! ;)

  2. Thank you again Jen for all your help in getting us to where we are now!!

  3. Thanks for the information. I love knowing why people choose certain paths. It helps me for future decision making.
    Wishing you all the best.

  4. Interesting about Korea...why are the planning on stopping?

  5. i'm glad you found the country that you are comfortable with!
as far as korea shutting down it's program, it's a rumor and it's unconfirmed. we were told that this rumor has been going around for years and really, if the government wanted to shut it down, they could do so at any time. the reason why there are rumors is because korea doesn't want to be seen as a country that cannot care for its own relinquished children and instead is trying to promote domestic adoption. however, with the continued cultural stigma around adoption (so very sad), domestic adoptions is not going up.
so, we're still hoping for the best because we want to go back for #2! :)

  6. I've got to tell you. One of the loves of my life was adopted around age 6 from Colombia. I am so thankful to his parents for adopting him!
