Today for National Adoption Month, I want to talk a bit about a popular type of dance in Colombia!
The dance is Cumbia Dancing. The music they dance to is actually called Cumbia, which started in Colombia's Caribbean region & then they have a traditional dance they do to this music style. Cumbia began as a courtship dance practiced among the African slave population & was later mixed with European instruments and musical characteristics. Cumbia started in the northern coast of South America, what is now Colombia and Panama, mainly in or around Cartagena during the period of Spanish colonization. Cumbia was mainly performed with just drums and claves.
Until the mid-20th century, Cumbia was considered to be an inappropriate dance performed primarily by the lower social classes.
Below you can watch a video of this dancing style!
